Across three centuries of leaving home, one battered toy rocket and one repeated gesture, a hand reaching for a hand, carry humanity from a booster caught out of the sky to a child born under another star.
The story
On a pre-dawn berm in 2026 a child lifts a battered tin rocket until its silhouette locks over a booster caught by twin steel arms. At dusk her family watches the ship leave; the first solar wings catch light the ground has not seen yet. The same gesture - a hand reaching for a hand - and the same toy, wear deepening from S1 to S4, will thread every era that follows.
On Mars in the 2030s robots grade a guide-light street; humans land through the dust; a city rises. By night a roof garden looks up at a lattice of wings filling the sky. Centuries later families board an interstellar fleet in an orbital gantry hall; at a viewport a traveler and a stayer part; outside, a ring of collectors is built around the home sun. On a new world under two suns a seed is set. In a galactic habitat a couple watches a spiral arm lit like a city grid at dusk; one new star ignites where the toy's nose points.
The camera falls to a single room. A child is born under that star. A fist closes in the foreground. On the sill the worn rocket frames the ringed gold of the sun it was made under - tin over flare, the first frame answered.
